He was a poet and a journalist Faiz hailed from an academic family that was well known in literary circles. His home was often the scene of a gathering of local poets and writers who met to promote the literacy movement in his native province.

It was during his college years that he met M. N. Roy and Muzaffar Ahmed who influenced him to become a member of the Communist Party. In 1941, Faiz became affectionate with Alys Faiz, a British national and a member of Communist Party of the United Kingdom, who was a student at the Government College University where Faiz taught poetry. Faiz was a good friend of Soviet poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko who once said "In Faiz's autobiography... is his poetry, the rest is just a footnote".

During his lifetime, Faiz published eight books and received accolades for his works.

Faiz was a humanist, a lyrical poet. Faiz's writings are comparatively new verse form in Urdu poetry based on Western models.Faiz was influenced by the works of Allama Iqbal and Mirza Ghalib, assimilating the modern Urdu with the classical. During his life, Faiz was concerned with more broader socialists ideas, using Urdu poetry for the cause and expansion of socialism in the country.

The Urdu poetry and Ghazals influenced Faiz to continue his political themes as non-violent and peaceful, opposing the far left politics in Pakistan. In 1947, he became editor of the Pakistan Times and in 1948,During the 1971 Winter war, Faiz rallied to mobilise the people, writing patriotic poems and songs that opposed the bloodshed during separation of Bangladesh from Pakistan.

Raaz-e-Ulfat Chhupa Ke Dekh Lia

Raaz-e-Ulfat Chhupa Ke Dekh Lia
Dil Bohat Kuch Jalaa Ke Dekh Lia

Aur Kia Dekhnay Ko Baaki Hai ?
Aap Se Dil Lagaa Ke Dekh Lia

Wo Mere Ho Ke Bhi Mere Na Howay
Un Ko Apna Banaa Ke Dekh Lia

Aaj Unki Nazar Mein Kuch Ham Ne
Sab Ki Nazrain Bacha Ke Dekh Lia

“Faiz” Takmeel-e-Gham Bhi Na Ho Saki
Ishq Ko Aazmaa Ke Dekh Lia

Raaz-e-Ulfat chupa
Ai dil-e-betaab, theher

tiragi hai ki umandti hi chali jaati hai

shab ki rag-rag se lahu phoot raha ho jaise

chal rahi hai kuchh is andaaz se nabz-e-hasti

dono aalam ka nasha toot raha ho jaise..

raat ka garm lahu aur bhi beh jane do

yehi tareeki to hai ghaza-e-rukhsaar-e-seher

subh hone hi ko hai

ai dil-e-betaab, theher..

abhi zanjeer chhanakti hai paas-e-parda-e-saaz

mutlaq-ul-hukm hai shiraaza-e-asbaab abhi

saaghar-e-naab mein aansu bhi dhalak jaate hain

laghzish-e-pa mein hai paabandi-e-aadaab abhi

apne deewaanon ko deewaana to ban lene do

apne maikhaanon ko maikhaana to ban lene do

jald ye satwat-e-asbaab bhi uth jaaegi

ye giraanbaari-e-aadaab bhi uth jaaegi

khwah zanjir chhanakti hi, chhanakti hi rahe

ai dil-e-betaab, theher..

Khuda Vo Vaqt Na Laaye

Khuda vo vaqt na laaye ke sogvaar ho tu

Sukoon ki neend tujhe bhi haraam ho jaaye
Tiri masarrat paiham tamaam ho jaaye
Tori hayaat tujhe talkh jaam ho jaaye

Vo dil ke teray liye beqaraar ab bhi hai
Vo aankh jis ko tira intezaar ab bhi hai

Youn Arz-o-Talab Se

Youn arz-o-talab se kab aye dil, patthar dil paani hotay hain

kuch mohtasibon ki khalvat mein kuch vaaiz ke ghar jaati hai
ham bada-kashon ke hisse ki ab jaam mein kam-tar jaati hai

Tum laakh raza ki khu daalo, kab khu-e-sitamgar jaati hai

Bedaad garon ki basti hai yaan daad kahaan khairaat kahaan
Sar phorti phirti hai nadaan fariyaad jo dar dar jaati hai

Haan, jaan ke zeyan ki hum ko bhi tashveesh hai lekin kiya kijay
Her reh jo udher ko jaati hai, maqtal se guzar ker jaati hai

ab kuch-e-dil-bar ka rah-rau rahzan bhi bane to baat bane
pahre se adu talte hi nahin aur raat barabar jati hai

Hum ehl-e-qafas tanha bhi nahin, her roz naseem-e-subh-e-watan
Yaadon se moattar aati hai, ashkon se munavvar jaati hai

Khuda woh vaqt na Laaye
Ai dil-e-betaab,thehar
Youn arz-o-talb se
Dil na-umeed to nahin, nakaam hi to hai

Dil na-umeed to nahin, nakaam hi to hai
lambi hai Gham ki shaam magar shaam hi to hai

raat yuun dil mein teri khoi hui yaad aai
jaise virane mein chupke se bahar aa jaye

jaise sahraon mein haule se chale baad-e-nasim
jaise bimaar ko be-vajah qaraar aa jaye

mata-e-lauk-o-qalam cheen gayi to kya Gham hai
ki khun-e-dil mein Dubo li hain ungliyaN main ne

zubaan par mohar lagi hai to kya ki rakh di hai
har halqa-e-zanjir mein zubaaN maiN ne

Dil na-umeed to nahin

"Sunte Hain Ki Mil Jaati Hai Har Cheez Dua Se
Ik roz tumhein maang ke dekhenge Khuda se

Tum saamne hote ho to hai kaif ki baarish
Vo din bhi the jab aag barasti thi ghata se

Ai dil tu unhein dekh ke kuch aise tarapana
Aa jaaye hansi un ko jo baithe hain khafa se

Duniya bhi mili hai gam-e-duniya bhi mila hai
Vo kyon nahi milta jise maanga tha Khuda se"

Sunte Hain Ki Mil Jaati hai har cheez Dua se
Sunte hai ki mil jaati hai
